Quick answer

The best time to visit Kerala for most travellers is October to March, when days are drier and comfortable across the hills, backwaters and beaches. April and May are hot on the coast but mild in Munnar. June to September is the monsoon: green, quieter and often lower rates, with more rain and some closures.

The best time to visit Kerala depends on two things: where in the state you are going and what kind of trip you want. Kerala is a narrow strip between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, so you can be in cool tea hills in the morning and humid backwaters by evening. Each month treats those places a little differently.

This guide goes month by month in plain words. It does not list temperatures, because they vary by year and by place. Check a reliable forecast close to your dates and confirm any activity before travel.

When is the best time to visit Kerala overall?

October to March. The heavy rains are over, roads are drier, and the hills, backwaters and beaches are all pleasant at the same time. That is why it is also the busiest and often the most expensive period, especially around Christmas and New Year.

Kerala overall: best months to go

Kerala overall, by month. Best: January, February, March, October, November, December. Good: April, May. Wet: June, July, August, September. Patterns vary from year to year.

October and November

The southwest monsoon has usually moved on by October, though Kerala often gets a second, shorter spell of rain from the northeast monsoon around October and November. Showers tend to come in the afternoon or evening. Waterfalls are still full and the hills are at their greenest.

This is a good window if you want the post-rain colours without the December crowds. Clear air after rain and big clouds over the hills also make October a good month for photography.

December and January

These are the classic months. Mornings in Munnar can feel properly cold, the backwaters are calm and the beaches are in full swing. The Christmas and New Year fortnight is the busiest time of the year in Kerala. Book hotels and houseboats early and expect higher rates for those weeks.

Is December the best time to visit Kerala?

It is the most popular month, which is not quite the same thing. December has reliable weather across the state, calm backwaters and good beach conditions. It also has the highest demand, especially from the week before Christmas to the first days of January. Rooms with the best views go early, and popular viewpoints are busy.

If your dates are flexible, early December or the second half of January often give you the same weather with fewer crowds. If your dates are fixed, book stays and houseboats as early as you can.

February and March

Still dry and comfortable, with fewer holiday crowds than December. The coast starts to warm up in March. Many travellers who want good weather without the peak-season rush choose late January to early March. It is also a comfortable time for families, before the school holidays begin.

April and May

These are the hottest months on the coast and the backwaters. The hills stay mild, which is why Munnar and Vagamon are busy with families during school holidays. Pre-monsoon thunderstorms can arrive in May. A hills-focused trip works well; a beach-focused one is less comfortable.

If you travel in April or May, plan backwater and beach time for early mornings and late afternoons, and keep the middle of the day for indoor time or the hills.

Is the monsoon a good time to visit Kerala?

It can be, if you want green landscapes, quiet roads and slower days. The main monsoon runs roughly from June to September. Rain can be heavy and continuous for days, especially in June and July. Hill roads may slow down, some trails and viewpoints close, and the sea is too rough for swimming.

June and July are usually the wettest months. August and September often bring longer dry breaks, though there is no guarantee in any year.

Hotel rates are often lower in this period. Many Ayurveda resorts run monsoon programmes, and the backwaters look dramatic under dark skies.

Onam and August

Onam, Kerala's harvest festival, usually falls in late August or September. Check the date for your year. Homes and towns are decorated, and snake boat races are held on the backwaters around this season. It is a lively time to visit, and rooms in Alleppey can fill up around race days.

Which month suits which trip?

  • Honeymoon with hills, houseboat and beach: November to February
  • Family trip in school holidays: April and May, focused on the hills
  • Quiet, green and lower rates: June to September
  • Festivals and boat races: August and September, around Onam
  • Beach time: roughly November to March

Practical tips for any month

Pack a light rain layer whatever the season, because showers can surprise you even in the dry months. Leave a buffer day if you are flying out during the monsoon. Book early for Christmas, New Year and long weekends, and for Onam if you want to see the boat races. And check current rates for your exact dates, because prices move a lot between seasons. Travel insurance that covers weather delays is worth considering whenever you go.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Kerala?

For most travellers, December to February gives the best balance of dry days, comfortable sightseeing and calm seas. November and March are nearly as good with fewer crowds. If you prefer lower rates and green landscapes, consider the monsoon months, but expect rain and some closures.

Is October a good time to visit Kerala?

Yes, for many trips. The main monsoon has usually ended, waterfalls are full and the hills are very green. You may still get afternoon or evening showers from the second monsoon. It is quieter than December, so rooms and houseboats are often easier to book.

Is it too hot to visit Kerala in May?

The coast and backwaters are hot and humid in April and May, which some travellers find tiring. The hills, including Munnar, Thekkady and Vagamon, stay much milder. A hills-focused trip with an early-morning houseboat or day cruise works well in these months.

Can we visit Kerala beaches in the monsoon?

You can visit, but swimming is generally not advisable. The sea is rough and currents can be strong from roughly June to September. The coast is dramatic and quiet, and some beach cafés close. Follow local warnings and enjoy the view from the cliff or the sand.

When is Kerala cheapest to visit?

Hotel and houseboat rates are often lower in the monsoon months, roughly June to September, apart from festival dates. Midweek travel and the weeks just before December can also help. Rates change every year, so check current rates for your dates before you decide.
