Kerala Trip Cost: Budget, Standard and Luxury

Quick answer
A Kerala trip cost depends on hotel level, number of nights, season, transport and whether you add a houseboat. Budget trips use simple hotels and fewer stops, standard trips use comfortable three to four-star resorts, and luxury trips use top resorts and private houseboats. Check current rates; our starting prices are below.
At a glance
| Biggest cost | Hotels and houseboats |
|---|---|
| Tiers compared | Budget, standard, premium, luxury |
| Usually extra | Flights or trains to Kerala, 5% GST |
| Price basis | Per person for most tours, per couple for honeymoons |
| Busy weeks | Christmas, New Year, long weekends |
| Lower-rate months | Often the monsoon; check current rates |
A Kerala trip cost is shaped by a handful of choices: where you sleep, how many nights and places you include, when you travel and how you get around. This guide compares budget, standard and luxury trips in plain terms and shows live starting prices from our own packages. We do not quote market prices, because they change quickly; check current rates for your dates.
Kerala itself, on India's south-west coast, is compact. Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey are each a few hours apart by road, so you can see a lot without long-haul travel inside the state.
What decides a Kerala trip cost?
- Hotel level and room type
- Number of nights and number of places
- Season and holiday dates
- Private car and driver, by vehicle size and distance
- Houseboat type, private or shared
- Entry tickets, activities and shows
- Travel to Kerala and 5% GST, usually extra
Hotels are almost always the largest share. A valley-view room in Munnar or a private pool villa at Kumarakom changes the total far more than an extra sightseeing stop.
Budget, standard and luxury: what is the difference?
| Style | Stays | Transport | Houseboat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Clean 2 to 3-star hotels, homestays | Shared or smaller car | Shared boat or day cruise |
| Standard | Comfortable 3 to 4-star resorts | Private car with driver | Private standard boat |
| Premium | 4-star and boutique resorts | Private car with driver | Premium private boat |
| Luxury | 5-star resorts, pool villas | Larger car or SUV | Luxury private boat |
Budget
Budget trips keep the main sights but use simpler rooms, fewer destinations and a shared houseboat or day cruise. They suit friends, students and travellers who spend most of the day out. Rooms are clean and simple, and breakfast is usually included.
Standard
Most families choose this level. Rooms are comfortable, many have views, and a private car with a driver handles the hill roads. Standard trips often include breakfast daily and a private houseboat with all meals.
Luxury
Luxury trips use top resorts, pool villas and premium private houseboats. The difference is space, service and privacy, not the places you see. Expect larger rooms, private pools or decks, and more meals included.

Does the season change the cost?
Yes, a lot. Christmas, New Year and long weekends are the most expensive periods and sell out early. The monsoon, roughly June to September, often brings lower hotel and houseboat rates, apart from festival and boat-race dates. Early December and midweek travel can also help.
How much should you set aside for extras?
Keep a little aside for things paid locally: entry tickets to parks and museums, boating, cultural shows, tips, snacks and shopping for tea and spices. These are usually small amounts, but they add up over a week.
- Entry tickets and boating
- Cultural shows such as Kathakali
- Tips for drivers and houseboat crew
- Meals not included in your plan
- Tea, spices and handicrafts
How can you lower a Kerala trip cost?
- Choose fewer destinations to reduce driving days
- Upgrade only one stay that matters most
- Travel outside holiday weeks if you can
- Use a day cruise instead of an overnight houseboat
- Ask for an itemised quote to compare like with like

What does a typical package include?
Most of our Kerala packages include the stays, daily breakfast, a private car with driver, fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's allowance. Houseboat stays include meals on board. Each package page lists inclusions and exclusions in full.
- Usually included: hotels, breakfast, car and driver, houseboat meals
- Usually excluded: travel to Kerala, 5% GST, entry tickets, most lunches and dinners
- Sometimes included: activities, shows or special dinners, as stated on the page
How do you compare two quotes?
Put them side by side and check the same things in each. A lower total often means a lower hotel level, a shared houseboat or fewer meals rather than a better deal.
- Hotel names or level, and room type
- Meal plan at each stop
- Houseboat type and AC hours
- Car type and whether fuel and tolls are included
- Whether GST is included
Is Kerala expensive to visit?
It does not have to be. Kerala has stays for every budget, and the main sights, such as tea estates, viewpoints and the backwaters, are open to everyone. The cost rises mainly with hotel level and the houseboat. A clear quote that lists every inclusion is the best way to know what you are paying for.
A simple way to start is to decide your hotel level first, then the number of nights, then whether you want a houseboat. Those three choices set most of the budget. Everything else, such as extra sightseeing, a special dinner or a spa session, can be added or removed later without changing the shape of the trip. If you are unsure, ask for two quotes at different levels and compare them side by side.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Kerala trip cost for five days?
It depends on hotel level, season and whether you add a houseboat. Our packages show starting prices for each style, per person or per couple, excluding travel to Kerala and 5% GST. For a figure for your dates, send us your plan and we will check current rates.
Is a Kerala trip cost per person or per couple?
On our site, most tours are priced per person on twin sharing, and honeymoon and some houseboat packages are priced per couple. Each package card and page states the basis clearly. Always check which basis a quote uses before comparing two options.
Are flights included in Kerala package prices?
No. Our package prices exclude flights or trains to Kerala and 5% GST. They include the stays, meals, transport and activities listed on each package page. Book travel to Kochi or Trivandrum separately and early, especially for holiday dates and long weekends.
What is the cheapest time to visit Kerala?
The monsoon months, roughly June to September, often have lower hotel and houseboat rates, except around Onam and boat-race dates. The trade-off is rain and some closed activities. Midweek travel and early December can also help. Check current rates for your dates.
What is the difference between standard and luxury?
Mainly the stays and service. Standard trips use comfortable three to four-star resorts and a private standard houseboat. Luxury trips use five-star resorts, pool villas and premium boats, with more space and privacy. The places and sightseeing are usually the same.
