If you are working out how to reach Munnar, the first thing to know is that the hill station has no airport and no railway station. Munnar sits high in Idukki district, Kerala, and every route ends with a winding drive up through tea estates. The usual gateway is Kochi. This guide covers Kochi, Chennai and Bangalore.

All distances and times below are approximate. They depend on traffic, weather, road works and stops, so allow extra time. We do not list train or flight timetables or fares, as they change; check them on official booking sites.

How far is Munnar from Kochi?

Roughly 110 to 130 km depending on where you start, and about four to five hours by road with a couple of short stops (approximate). From Kochi airport, the road runs through Perumbavoor, Kothamangalam and Adimali before climbing to Munnar.

The last two hours are the slowest, on hill roads with many bends. Waterfalls such as Cheeyappara and Valara sit right beside the road and make good stops.

  • By air: land at Kochi (Cochin International) and take a pre-booked car
  • By train: arrive at Aluva or Ernakulam, then drive
  • By bus: state and private buses run to Munnar, taking longer

How do you reach Munnar from Bangalore?

There are two common options. You can fly to Kochi and drive up, which is usually the quickest overall. Or you can drive the whole way, roughly 480 km and about nine to eleven hours (approximate), usually via Hosur, Salem, Coimbatore, Pollachi and Udumalpet, then up through the Chinnar and Marayoor side into Munnar.

Many travellers break the road trip with a night in Coimbatore or Pollachi. Overnight trains run from Bangalore towards Kerala and Coimbatore, and you can drive from the station.

How do you reach Munnar from Chennai?

Chennai is further. Most people fly to Kochi, or sometimes to Madurai or Coimbatore, and drive from there. From Madurai, the road climbs via Theni and Bodinayakanur and the Bodimettu ghat into Munnar. From Coimbatore, it goes via Udumalpet and Marayoor.

Driving the whole way from Chennai is roughly 600 km and about eleven to thirteen hours (approximate). Overnight trains from Chennai to Kerala or Coimbatore are another option, followed by a drive.

What is the nearest railway station to Munnar?

For trains from most of India, Aluva and Ernakulam in Kerala are the most practical, with a drive of about four to five hours (approximate). Theni in Tamil Nadu is closer on the map but has fewer long-distance trains. Check current train options for your dates.

Should you drive yourself or hire a car with a driver?

Most visitors hire a car with a driver. The hill roads are narrow, with tight bends, buses, mist and sometimes rain. A local driver knows where the road is slow and where to stop. They also know the clean restaurants and restrooms on the way, which matters on a long drive. If you do drive yourself, travel in daylight, use low gears on descents and do not stop on bends for photos.

  • Start early so you finish the climb in daylight
  • Carry motion-sickness tablets if bends affect you
  • Keep water and snacks in the car
  • Download offline maps; coverage can drop
  • Allow extra time in the monsoon

How to reach Munnar from other Kerala towns

  • From Thekkady: about 3 to 4 hours (approximate)
  • From Alleppey: about 4 to 5 hours (approximate)
  • From Vagamon: about 3 to 4 hours (approximate)
  • From Trivandrum: about 7 to 8 hours (approximate); many break the trip

These are typical drive times with short stops. Your driver may choose a different road depending on traffic, works or weather on the day.

How to reach Munnar in the monsoon

The same routes work in the monsoon, but allow extra time. Heavy rain can slow traffic on the hill section, and landslides occasionally close a road for some hours. Travel in daylight, follow official weather alerts and keep a buffer day before any flight home. Your hotel and driver will usually know the latest road conditions.

What should you plan for on arrival day?

If you arrive by an early flight, you can reach Munnar by mid-afternoon. If you land late, consider a night in Kochi and drive up the next morning, so you see the views on the way and avoid the hill road in the dark.

Keep the first evening free. After a long journey and a hill drive, most travellers are happy to check in, eat and rest. Start sightseeing the next morning, when views are usually clearest. A short walk around your resort is enough on the first evening.
