Quick answer
Varkala vs Kovalam depends on mood. Varkala has red cliffs, cliff-top cafés and a relaxed, creative feel. Kovalam has crescent beaches, a lighthouse and larger resort hotels close to Trivandrum airport. Both suit two or three nights at the end of a Kerala trip, ideally in the drier months.

Varkala vs Kovalam is the usual beach question at the end of a Kerala trip. Both lie on the Arabian Sea near Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), the state capital. Here is how Kerala Munnar Holidays helps couples choose.
Ending a Kerala honeymoon on a beach is a lovely way to slow down after the hills and backwaters. Varkala and Kovalam are the two names most couples hear, both in the south of the state and both within reach of Trivandrum. They feel quite different, though, and the right choice depends on the mood you want.
The setting
Varkala is known for its red laterite cliffs that rise straight above the beach. A path runs along the cliff top, lined with cafés, small shops and guesthouses, with wide views over the Arabian Sea. Steps lead down to the sand. Sunsets from the cliff are a highlight.
Kovalam is a series of crescent-shaped beaches separated by rocky headlands, with a well-known lighthouse at one end. It has a more traditional beach-resort layout, with hotels set along the coast and some on the hillsides behind.
Atmosphere
Varkala has a relaxed, bohemian feel, popular with yoga lovers and long-stay travellers. The cliff-top strip can be lively in the evenings during the season. Kovalam feels more like a classic resort town, with a mix of families, couples and groups, and a range of beachside restaurants.
- Varkala: cliff-top cafés, sunset views, yoga and a laid-back mood
- Kovalam: crescent beaches, lighthouse, resort hotels and seafood
Stays for couples
Both offer a wide range, from simple guesthouses to boutique and luxury resorts. In Varkala, cliff-top rooms with sea views are popular; many stays are small and characterful. Kovalam has more large resorts, including some with private beach access and infinity pools. As always, ask about the view and the walk to the beach when you book.
Is it safe to swim at Varkala and Kovalam?
The sea along Kerala's coast can be rough, especially during the monsoon, and currents can be strong. Swim only in areas marked as safe, follow lifeguards' flags and instructions where they are present, and avoid swimming after dark or when warnings are displayed. Conditions change, so ask locally each day.
Lifeguard cover, flags and safe swimming areas differ between beaches and can change during the day. In Varkala, the main beach below the cliff is the usual swimming spot; in Kovalam, Lighthouse Beach and Hawa Beach are the busiest. Ask your hotel each morning and, if in doubt, stay in the shallows.
Things to do nearby
From Varkala you can take a short trip to the Kappil backwaters, where a lake meets the sea, or visit the Janardhana Swamy temple, following its customs. From Kovalam, Trivandrum's museums and palaces and the Poovar estuary are within easy reach. Both towns offer Ayurvedic massages and yoga sessions.
How do you reach Varkala and Kovalam?
Both are reached most easily from Trivandrum airport, with Kovalam the closer of the two. Varkala also has a railway station on the main coastal line. If you are coming from the backwaters, the drive south takes several hours, so many couples plan the beach as the final stop and fly out of Trivandrum.
From Trivandrum airport, Kovalam is a short drive, usually well under an hour (approximate). Varkala is further north, roughly one and a half hours by road (approximate).
When to go
The cooler, drier months are the most popular for beach time, with calmer seas. During the monsoon, the sea is rough and swimming is generally not advisable, though the coast is dramatic and quiet. Some cliff-top businesses in Varkala close outside the main season, so check before travelling.
Planning around Varkala or Kovalam
Most couples spend two or three nights on the beach at the end of a Kerala trip. That is enough time for a few slow mornings, a sunset or two and perhaps an Ayurvedic massage, without feeling the need to rush. If you have more time, some travellers split the stay between both towns, as they are not far apart by road.
Think about what you want to do each day. If you mainly want to rest by a pool, the hotel matters more than the town. If you want to walk to cafés and shops in the evening, choose a stay close to the cliff in Varkala or near the main beaches in Kovalam. Ask about the walk to the beach, especially if the property is on a hillside with steps.
- Two nights: a relaxed end to a longer trip
- Three nights: time for a day trip and a spa session
- Four or more: a proper beach holiday in its own right
Varkala vs Kovalam: which beach should you choose?
Choose Varkala if you love the idea of cliff-top sunsets, small cafés and a slower, creative vibe. Choose Kovalam if you prefer a classic resort beach, bigger hotels and easy access to Trivandrum. Neither is better overall; they simply suit different moods.

Frequently asked questions
Which is quieter, Varkala or Kovalam?
Varkala's beach is often quieter, although the cliff-top strip can be lively in the evenings during the season. Kovalam's main beaches are busier, with more large hotels. In both towns, a stay slightly away from the centre gives you the calmest mornings and evenings.
Can we swim at Varkala or Kovalam during the monsoon?
Generally no. The sea along Kerala's coast is rough in the monsoon and currents can be strong. Even in the drier months, swim only where marked safe, follow lifeguard flags where present and avoid the water after dark or when warnings are shown.
Which airport is closest to Varkala and Kovalam?
Trivandrum International Airport serves both and is closer to Kovalam. Varkala also has a railway station on the main coastal line, which is handy if you arrive by train. Many couples end their Kerala trip at the beach and fly home from Trivandrum.
How many nights should we spend at the beach?
Two or three nights suit most couples at the end of a longer Kerala trip. That allows slow mornings, a sunset or two and perhaps an Ayurvedic massage. Four or more nights turns it into a proper beach holiday, with time for a day trip to Kappil or Poovar.
Can we visit both Varkala and Kovalam?
Yes. They are not far apart by road, so some couples split the stay or take a day trip from one to the other. Choose your base by the stay you want: small cliff-top rooms in Varkala or bigger resorts with pools in Kovalam.
