Quick answer

A classic Kerala honeymoon combines the Munnar tea hills, a private houseboat night in Alleppey and, if time allows, two nights at Varkala or Kovalam. Four to six nights is ideal. October to March is the most popular season. Costs depend mainly on hotel level, nights, season and the houseboat; check current rates.

A Kerala honeymoon gives couples three landscapes in one short trip: cool tea hills, slow backwaters and warm beaches, all within a few hours of each other by road. This guide covers where to go, how long to stay, what kind of stays to choose and what shapes the cost, so you can plan with confidence.

Kerala Munnar Holidays is a Munnar-based team, so we know the hills best, but this guide covers the whole state and points out where other places may suit you better.

Why is Kerala good for a honeymoon?

Because it combines variety with short distances. In five days you can wake up to mist over tea estates, spend a night on a private houseboat and finish with a sunset on a cliff above the sea. Resorts are used to honeymooners and can arrange small touches such as room decoration or a candlelight dinner without fuss.

Kerala also suits couples who want a slower trip. Most of the best moments are quiet ones: a balcony at sunrise, a cruise past paddy fields, a long lunch at a plantation. You do not need a packed plan to enjoy it.

Which are the best places for a Kerala honeymoon?

Munnar

Munnar, a hill station in Idukki district, is the most popular stop. Rolling tea estates, viewpoints, waterfalls and cool evenings make it ideal for the first part of a trip. Choose a resort with a valley-facing room; it matters more here than anywhere else. Two nights lets you have one full sightseeing day and one slow morning on the balcony, which is often the part couples remember most.

Thekkady

Thekkady sits beside Periyar Tiger Reserve. Couples come for spice plantation walks, a boat ride on Periyar Lake, evening Kathakali shows and forest-edge resorts. One night is enough for most.

Alleppey and Kumarakom

Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the houseboat capital. A private one-bedroom boat for a night is the moment most couples remember. Kumarakom, on Vembanad Lake, is quieter, with lakeside resorts and day cruises, and suits couples who prefer to sleep on land. Some couples do both: a lakeside resort night followed by a houseboat night, or the other way round.

Varkala and Kovalam

For a beach finish, Varkala has red cliffs and small cliff-top stays; Kovalam has crescent beaches and larger resorts. Both are near Trivandrum airport, so you can fly home from there.

Wayanad and Vagamon

For something quieter, Wayanad in north Kerala has forests, plantations and treehouse stays. Vagamon, near Idukki, has rolling meadows and pine forests with far fewer visitors than Munnar.

Which Kerala honeymoon route should you choose?

Most routes are built from the same pieces, in a different order or with one piece swapped. The classic loop starts in Kochi, climbs to Munnar, drops to Thekkady and ends on the Alleppey backwaters. Adding a beach means continuing south to Varkala or Kovalam and flying home from Trivandrum, which avoids a long drive back north to Kochi.

For a quieter trip, swap Munnar for Vagamon, or replace the houseboat with a lakeside resort in Kumarakom. For a trip focused on forests and seclusion, Wayanad in the north works on its own or alongside Coorg in Karnataka.

  • Classic: Munnar, Thekkady, Alleppey
  • Hills and beach: Munnar, Alleppey, Varkala or Kovalam
  • Quiet: Vagamon, Kumarakom
  • Forest: Wayanad treehouse and plantation stays

How many days do you need?

Four to six nights suits most couples. Three nights works for Munnar and a houseboat. Five nights adds Thekkady. Six or seven nights lets you add a beach without rushing. Longer than that, consider adding Wayanad or splitting the beach stay between Varkala and Kovalam.

  • 3 nights: Munnar (2) and Alleppey houseboat (1)
  • 4 nights: Munnar (2), Thekkady (1), houseboat (1)
  • 6 nights: add two nights at Varkala or Kovalam
  • 7+ nights: add Kumarakom, Wayanad or a longer beach stay

What kind of stays should you choose?

This is where a Kerala honeymoon is won or lost. In Munnar, a room with a valley view and a balcony changes the whole stay. On the backwaters, a private houseboat or a lake-facing room at Kumarakom is the highlight. At the beach, think about the walk to the sand and whether you want a small cliff-top room or a resort with a pool.

  • Valley-view hill resorts in Munnar
  • Private one-bedroom houseboats in Alleppey
  • Lakeside resorts and pool villas in Kumarakom
  • Treehouses and plantation stays in Wayanad
  • Glass-dome and tea-estate bungalow stays near Munnar and Vagamon

Upgrading one stay, usually the Munnar resort or the houseboat, often feels better than upgrading everything a little. When comparing resorts, ask about the view from the room itself, not just from the restaurant, and whether the balcony is private.

When is the best time for a Kerala honeymoon?

October to March is the most popular period, with drier roads, clear views and calm seas. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks. March to May is warm on the coast but mild in the hills. June to September is the monsoon: misty, green and quieter, with more rain and some activities closed.

More detail is in our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Kerala.

How much does a Kerala honeymoon cost?

There is no single figure. The cost depends mostly on the hotel level, the number of nights and places, the season, and whether you choose a private houseboat. Flights or trains to Kerala and 5% GST are not included in our package prices. The quickest way to see real numbers is to look at package starting prices, then ask for a quote for your dates.

What romantic experiences can you add?

  • Flower bed decoration on the first night
  • A candlelight dinner with a valley or lake view
  • A cake on the houseboat
  • A sunset canoe ride through narrow canals
  • A couple's Ayurvedic massage
  • A short photoshoot in the tea estates

Pick one or two that matter to you rather than adding everything, and space them out across the whole trip. A free evening with nothing planned is also a gift on a honeymoon. Ask your hotel what they can arrange before you arrive, so there are no last-minute surprises on the bill, and keep at least one evening completely unplanned for the two of you.

Practical tips before you book

  • Fly into Kochi; fly out of Trivandrum if you end at a beach
  • Plan only one long drive per day on hill roads
  • Carry photo ID for both of you; hotels ask for it
  • Pack layers for the hills and light cotton for the coast
  • Ask for an itemised quote so you can compare like with like

Tell your hotels in advance that you are on honeymoon. Many will arrange a small welcome touch, and it helps them give you a quieter room where possible. Keep digital copies of all bookings on both phones in case coverage drops in the hills.

If you would rather someone plan it for you, the honeymoon team at Kerala Munnar Holidays can suggest a route and stays that fit your dates and budget.

Start with the Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey honeymoon, or for a beach finish the Kerala honeymoon with Kovalam beach.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best place in Kerala for a honeymoon?

Munnar is the most popular for its tea hills and cool weather, and an Alleppey houseboat night is the most memorable single experience. Most couples combine the two. If you want something quieter, look at Wayanad, Vagamon or a lakeside resort in Kumarakom instead of the busier spots.

How many days are enough for a Kerala honeymoon?

Four to six nights suits most couples. Three nights covers Munnar and a houseboat at a relaxed pace. Four or five adds Thekkady. Six or seven lets you finish with two nights at Varkala or Kovalam without long drives every day. Shorter trips work best with fewer stops.

Is Kerala good for a honeymoon in the monsoon?

Yes, for couples who like rain and quiet. The hills are misty and green and roads are less crowded. Heavy rain can slow drives and close some trails, and the sea is rough. Keep the plan flexible and choose stays you will enjoy spending time in.

Do Kerala honeymoon packages include flights?

Our packages do not include flights or trains to Kerala, and prices exclude 5% GST. They include the stays, meals, transport and extras listed on each package page. Book your travel to Kochi or Trivandrum separately, and check current fares early for holiday dates.

Can we customise a Kerala honeymoon package?

Yes. You can change hotels, add or remove places, upgrade one stay or add extras such as a candlelight dinner. Send us your dates, number of nights and the kind of stay you like on WhatsApp, and we will suggest options with a clear quote.
