Panchakarma in Kerala is the most demanding programme most Ayurveda centres offer, and it helps to understand it before you book. The word means five actions, referring to five classical procedures described in Ayurvedic texts. In practice, a Panchakarma stay is a structured programme of several weeks, planned by a qualified doctor and adjusted day by day.

This is general information, not medical advice. Speak to your own doctor before booking, and to the centre's doctor on arrival. Ayurveda does not replace medical treatment. We describe what the programme involves, not what it will do for you, as no outcome can be promised.

What are the five procedures?

  • Vamana: a supervised therapeutic vomiting procedure
  • Virechana: a supervised purgation using herbal preparations
  • Basti: enemas using herbal oils or decoctions
  • Nasya: medicated oils or preparations given through the nose
  • Raktamokshana: a traditional bloodletting procedure, offered by few centres today

Not everyone receives all five. The doctor chooses which, if any, are suitable for you after consultation, and some guests are advised against certain procedures. Ask the doctor to explain each one, including what it involves physically, before you agree.

How does a Panchakarma programme run?

Programmes usually move through three stages. Preparation, sometimes called purvakarma, lasts several days and includes daily oil massages, steam treatments and often Snehapana, where ghee or medicated oil is taken by mouth in increasing amounts. The main procedures follow, one or two at a time, on days set by the doctor. Recovery, the final stage, brings a gradual return to normal food with lighter treatments and rest.

How long does Panchakarma take?

Most centres plan Panchakarma for 14 to 21 days, and some recommend longer. Shorter stays, such as a week, are usually described as a restorative programme or preparation rather than full Panchakarma. The doctor may change the plan as you go, so allow some flexibility in your travel dates and avoid booking an onward trip straight after.

What are the rules during the programme?

Guests usually follow a simple vegetarian diet set by the centre, avoid alcohol and smoking, sleep early, and limit screen time, sun, swimming and heavy exercise. Days are quiet and mostly spent on site. Some procedures are tiring, so many people find it helps to arrive rested and not plan sightseeing during the stay.

How much does Panchakarma in Kerala cost?

Costs vary by centre, room type, the doctor's plan and the length of stay. Most programmes include accommodation, all meals, daily treatments and consultations, but medicines and extra treatments may be charged separately. Who should be careful?

Panchakarma is not suitable for everyone. Tell both your own doctor and the centre's doctor about any health condition, medicines, pregnancy, recent surgery or other concerns before you book. A genuine centre will ask detailed questions and may say no to some procedures or to the programme altogether. Do not stop prescribed medicines without speaking to the doctor who prescribed them.

What should you ask a centre?

  • Will a qualified doctor plan and supervise the whole programme?
  • Which procedures are planned for me, and what does each involve?
  • What is included, and which medicines or oils cost extra?
  • What happens if I need to stop early?
  • Is there a doctor available at night?

Before you arrive, the centre may send a questionnaire about your health, medicines and routine, and ask for recent medical reports. Fill it in carefully. Some doctors also suggest a lighter diet for a few days before the programme. Plan your arrival for daylight and give yourself a rest day after travelling.

During the stay, days are slow. Treatments usually happen in the morning, with rest, light reading and short walks for the remainder of the day. Some guests find the preparation stage tiring, especially when taking ghee by mouth, and the doctor will adjust the plan if needed. Bring comfortable, loose clothes you do not mind staining with oil.

After the programme, the doctor will usually give advice on food and routine for the following days or weeks. Allow time to return to normal activity gradually and avoid planning long flights or heavy work immediately afterwards if the doctor recommends a rest period.

Season is a personal choice. Many practitioners traditionally value the cooler, humid monsoon months, around June to September, while others run programmes all year. Ask the centre's doctor which season they suggest for you.

Couples can do Panchakarma at the same time, but each person has a separate consultation and plan, and procedures happen individually. Room-sharing is usually fine, though some centres prefer guests on certain procedure days to rest alone.

Finally, check the paperwork: what is included, what is extra, what happens if you need to stop early, and whether medicines are provided for after you leave.

Keep a small notebook of how each day went and any questions, and bring it to your doctor meetings.

Frequently asked questions

What is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is a structured Ayurvedic programme built around five classical procedures, with stages of preparation, main procedures and recovery. A qualified doctor plans which procedures are suitable after a consultation. Ayurveda does not replace medical treatment, and no specific outcome is promised by us or by the centre.

How many days does Panchakarma take?

Most centres plan Panchakarma for 14 to 21 days, and some recommend longer. The doctor may adjust the plan during your stay, so keep your travel dates flexible. Programmes of a week or less are usually called a restorative programme or preparation rather than a full Panchakarma, even if they include similar oil treatments.

How much does Panchakarma cost in Kerala?

It varies by centre, room type, programme length and the doctor's plan. Ask whether medicines, oils and extra treatments are included in the price. Our own programme starting prices are shown in the table above and come from current package data, excluding travel and 5% GST. Ask us for a quote for your dates.

Can we do sightseeing during Panchakarma?

Generally not. Doctors usually ask guests to stay on site, rest, avoid sun and heavy exercise and follow the set diet. Some procedures are tiring. If you want to see Kerala, plan sightseeing before the programme starts, or after the recovery stage once the doctor agrees you are ready to travel.

Is Panchakarma safe for everyone?

No. It is not suitable for everyone, and some procedures may be advised against for you. Speak to your own doctor before booking and give the centre's doctor a full health history, including medicines, pregnancy and recent surgery. A genuine centre will ask detailed questions and may change or decline the programme.
