Quick answer
In the kumarakom vs alleppey choice, pick Kumarakom for a quiet lakeside resort, birdwatching and calm water, and Alleppey for the widest choice of houseboats, canals and village life. Both sit on Vembanad Lake and are about two hours from Kochi (approximate). Many couples combine them: a houseboat night from Alleppey, then a Kumarakom resort.

Kumarakom vs Alleppey is one of the most common questions couples and families ask us when planning the backwaters. Both places sit on Vembanad Lake, Kerala's largest lake, and share the same palm-lined canals and paddy fields. The difference is mostly in how you stay. Kumarakom, on the eastern shore near Kottayam, is a cluster of lakeside resorts. Alleppey (Alappuzha), on the western side, is the main base for houseboats.
Neither is better overall. The right choice depends on what you want from one or two nights on the water.
What is the main difference?
In Kumarakom, the lake is the view from your room. Resorts have gardens, pools and jetties, and you go out on the water by canoe, shikara or a day cruise. In Alleppey, the water is the place you stay. Houseboats board around midday, cruise through the canals and moor for the night. Alleppey town is also busier, with a beach, a market and more budget options.
Which is quieter?
Kumarakom, clearly. Resorts are spread along the shore and the village is small. Alleppey's main boat routes can be crowded in peak months, with many houseboats on the same stretch of Punnamada Lake. Quieter routes exist, especially deeper into Kuttanad's narrow canals, but you need to ask for them when booking.
Which is better for a houseboat?
Alleppey has far more houseboats, so you have more choice of size, style and price, and more routes. Kumarakom has fewer boats, which often cruise on the open lake rather than narrow canals. If an overnight houseboat is the main reason for your trip, Alleppey is usually the simpler choice. If you prefer a resort and want only a few hours on the water, Kumarakom works well.
Which suits couples, families and older travellers?
- Couples wanting privacy: a Kumarakom lake resort, or a private Alleppey houseboat
- Families with young children: a Kumarakom resort with a pool, plus a day cruise
- Older travellers: Kumarakom for space and fewer steps, or a houseboat with a ground-level bedroom
- Budget trips: Alleppey, which has more mid-range and shared options
Families sometimes worry about a night on the water with small children. Houseboats have railings and crews used to children, but space is limited. A resort with a day cruise is often more comfortable.
What else is there to do?
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, on the lake shore, is best early in the morning and in the cooler months. Village walks, toddy-shop lunches and sunset cruises are easy to arrange. In Alleppey, you can add the beach and lighthouse, canoe trips through village canals and, if your dates match, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race on Punnamada Lake, held on a weekend in August in most years. Check the date for your year.
| Factor | Kumarakom | Alleppey |
|---|---|---|
| Typical stay | Lakeside resort | Houseboat or lakeside hotel |
| Feel | Quiet, spread out | Busier, more choice |
| Houseboats | Fewer, open lake | Many, canals and lake |
| Bird life | Bird sanctuary on site | Canal-side birds |
| Best for | Rest, privacy, families | First houseboat, budget range |
How do you get there and between them?
From Kochi airport, Kumarakom is roughly two to two and a half hours by road and Alleppey roughly one and a half to two hours, depending on traffic (approximate). Kottayam railway station is closest to Kumarakom, and Alleppey has its own station. Driving between the two takes about an hour to an hour and a half (approximate). Some houseboats will also cross the lake between them, which makes a scenic transfer.
Should you combine Kumarakom and Alleppey?
For two nights, many couples do both: one night on a houseboat from Alleppey, then one night at a Kumarakom resort to rest. It gives you the experience of sleeping on the water and the comfort of a larger room. On a one-night trip, choose whichever matters more, the houseboat or the resort.
Seasons affect both places in the same way. October to March is the most comfortable time, with calm water and pleasant evenings. The monsoon, from about June to September, makes the lake green and dramatic, and rates are often lower, though cruising can be shortened in heavy rain. April and May are hot and humid, so air-conditioned rooms and boats matter more.
Food is another small difference. Kumarakom resorts usually offer a full restaurant menu, including continental and North Indian dishes, while houseboat cooks in Alleppey prepare fixed Kerala-style meals on board, often with fresh karimeen fish. Both can cater for vegetarian and Jain diets if you ask when booking. Toddy shops near both places serve spicy local food for adventurous eaters.
Think about the rest of your route too. Kumarakom is closer to Kottayam and an easy drive from Thekkady and Munnar, so it sits well in the middle of a hills and backwaters trip. Alleppey is closer to the coast and to Kochi, and it connects easily with Marari beach or a drive south to Varkala and Kovalam.
Finally, look at the room or cabin itself. A houseboat bedroom is compact, often with a small attached bathroom. A lake resort room or cottage is larger and may have a private sit-out or plunge pool, which some couples value after several nights on the road.
Ask both kinds of stay the same questions: what time check-in and check-out are, which meals are included, and what happens if it rains heavily on your date.
Our Alleppey houseboat and Kumarakom honeymoon combines both, and the 3-night Alleppey and Kumarakom backwaters tour suits families. Compare the two places in our Kumarakom destination guide and Alleppey destination guide.

Neither is better overall. Kumarakom is better for a quiet lake resort, birdwatching and space. Alleppey is better for an overnight houseboat, more boat choice and a wider range of budgets. If you have two nights, many travellers enjoy one night in each, starting with a houseboat and ending at a resort.
Is Kumarakom good for a honeymoon?
Yes. Lake resorts in Kumarakom offer privacy, gardens, pools and sunset views from your own room or jetty. It is quieter than Alleppey and suits couples who want rest after the hills. You can still go out on the lake by canoe or day cruise, or add a houseboat night.
Can we take a houseboat from Kumarakom?
Yes, though there are fewer boats than in Alleppey and many cruise mainly on the open lake. If you want narrow canals and village scenes, Alleppey usually offers more routes. Tell us which you prefer, and we will suggest a boat and starting point that matches it.
How far is Kumarakom from Alleppey?
About an hour to an hour and a half by road, depending on the route and traffic (approximate). Across the lake by boat it can be a pleasant transfer of a few hours. That makes it easy to combine a houseboat night from Alleppey with a resort night in Kumarakom.
Which is better for families with kids?
Kumarakom resorts are usually easier for families with young children, thanks to pools, lawns and larger rooms, with a day cruise for the water experience. Older children often love a night on a houseboat in Alleppey. Ask for a boat with railings all around and a bedroom on the main deck.
