Quick answer

An Alleppey houseboat price depends mainly on the boat category, the number of bedrooms, private or shared use, AC hours, the season and whether you stay overnight or take a day cruise. Meals are usually included on overnight stays. Our own package prices are below; check current rates for your dates.

If you are comparing an Alleppey houseboat price from two different sellers and wondering why they differ, the answer is usually in the details. Alleppey (Alappuzha), about two hours south of Kochi by road (approximate), has many boats, and they vary widely in size, finish and what is included. This guide explains the types, what changes the cost and how to book well.

We do not quote market prices here, because they change often and depend on the operator. Instead, you will find our own package starting prices, pulled live from our package pages.

What types of houseboats are there?

By number of bedrooms

Boats range from one bedroom up to several. A one-bedroom boat is the usual choice for couples. Two and three-bedroom boats suit families and small groups. Larger boats suit big groups but feel less private.

By category

Operators commonly group boats into categories such as standard, deluxe, premium and luxury. The difference is in the finish, the size of the bedroom and deck, the bathroom, furniture and sometimes an upper deck. Category names are not standard across operators, so always ask what a category actually means. Photos of the actual boat, rather than a sample, are the best way to compare.

Private, shared or day cruise

A private boat is yours alone with its crew. A shared boat has several couples or families with separate bedrooms and a common deck and meals. A day cruise lasts a few hours without an overnight stay and is the lightest option. Some day cruises include lunch on board.

What changes an Alleppey houseboat price?

Several things, and they stack up. Here are the main ones, roughly in order of impact.

  • Category and finish of the boat
  • Number of bedrooms
  • Private or shared use
  • Season and holiday dates
  • Air-conditioning hours (many boats run AC mainly at night)
  • Upper deck or extra sitting areas
  • Meal plan and any special menu
  • Add-ons such as decoration, a cake or a canoe ride

Season matters a lot. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks, and long weekends also push demand up. The monsoon often brings lower rates, although cruising can be cut short in heavy weather.

What is included in a houseboat stay?

On most private overnight stays, lunch, evening tea and snacks, dinner and breakfast are included, along with drinking water and the crew's services. The crew is usually a captain, a cook and a helper, and they look after you from boarding to check-out. Day cruises often include lunch or snacks only. Always check the inclusions in writing.

  • Usually included: meals on overnight stays, crew, drinking water
  • Often extra: decoration, cake, special menus, canoe ride
  • Check: AC hours, boarding and check-out times, where the boat moors

When should you book?

Book as early as you can for December, January and holiday weekends. In quieter months you have more choice closer to the date. If your dates are fixed, booking early also lets you pick a boat with a good bedroom and deck rather than whatever is left. For Onam and boat-race weeks around August and September, book early as well, as rooms and boats in Alleppey fill quickly.

Which questions should you ask before booking?

  • Is the boat private for us?
  • How many bedrooms does it have, and which one is ours?
  • What are the AC hours?
  • What time is boarding and check-out?
  • Which meals are included, and can you cater for our diet?
  • Are there any charges on board?
  • Where does the boat cruise and moor?

Clear answers make it easier to compare two boats fairly. A quote that looks cheaper than the rest often leaves something out, such as AC hours, a meal or the boarding point, so compare line by line before you pay a deposit.

How do you pick the right houseboat for your group?

Start with who is travelling. Couples usually want a private one-bedroom boat with a good deck. Families with children often prefer a two-bedroom boat or a day cruise, so the children can sleep in a hotel. Groups of friends can share a larger boat, but check that every bedroom has its own bathroom.

  • Couples: private one-bedroom, ideally with an upper deck
  • Families: two-bedroom boat, or a day cruise plus hotel
  • Friends: larger boat with attached bathrooms
  • Older travellers: a boat with easy boarding and few steps

Is Kumarakom an alternative?

Yes. Kumarakom, on Vembanad Lake, has fewer boats and a quieter feel, with lakeside resorts and day cruises. It suits travellers who prefer to sleep on land or want a resort with a pool alongside a few hours on the water.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Alleppey houseboat prices vary so much?

Because boats differ in category, size, number of bedrooms, AC hours and finish, and because season and holiday dates change demand. Inclusions also vary, especially meals and extras. Compare the same type of boat, private or shared, with the same inclusions before deciding which quote is better value.

Is a private houseboat much more expensive than a shared one?

A private boat usually costs more than a single bedroom on a shared boat, because you pay for the whole boat and crew. For couples and families the privacy is often worth it. Ask for both options for your dates so you can see the difference clearly.

Are meals included in the houseboat price?

On most private overnight stays, lunch, evening tea, dinner and breakfast are included, cooked on board by the crew. Day cruises often include only lunch or snacks. Drinks other than water, special menus and celebrations are usually extra. Always confirm the meal plan in writing before you pay.

Is a houseboat cheaper in the monsoon?

Rates are often lower in the monsoon months, roughly June to September, apart from festival and boat-race dates. The trade-off is rain, and cruising can be shortened in heavy weather for safety. If you are flexible, ask us to compare rates across a few dates.

Should we choose a day cruise or an overnight stay?

An overnight stay gives you the sunset, dinner on board and a calm morning, which most couples love. A day cruise of a few hours is lighter on time and budget and suits families with small children or travellers who prefer a hotel at night.
