3-Day Munnar Itinerary for Couples

Quick answer

A 3 day Munnar itinerary works best as two nights in the hills: drive up from Kochi on day one, spend day two on Eravikulam, a tea estate walk and the tea museum, and use day three for Top Station or the lakes before heading down. Confirm park opening and timings before you travel.

This 3 day Munnar itinerary is for couples who want the tea hills at an easy pace. Munnar sits at roughly 1,600 metres in Kerala's Idukki district, where the Kanan Devan Hills are covered with tea estates. Three days gives you two nights up there: enough for the main viewpoints, one long walk and an evening with nothing planned.

Everything below assumes a private car with a driver, which is how most couples travel here. Drive times are approximate and depend on traffic, rain and how often you stop for photographs.

Is a 3 day Munnar itinerary enough?

For Munnar alone, yes. The main sights sit within about an hour of town, so two full days cover them without long stretches in the car. What you give up is the more remote side trips, such as Marayoor's sandalwood forest or Kolukkumalai at sunrise, which each need most of a morning.

If you can add a night, you will spend it better on a slow morning than on extra sights. A fourth day also lets you visit Thekkady or the backwaters on the way back down.

Day 1: Kochi to Munnar

Kochi airport to Munnar is around 110 km and takes about four to five hours with stops (approximate). The road rises through rubber and spice country before the first tea appears near Adimali. Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls are beside the road and are fullest from July to October.

Aim to arrive by mid-afternoon. Light fades early in the hills and the last stretch is all bends. Check in, have tea on the balcony and keep dinner close to your hotel. This first evening is the one couples most often over-plan.

  • Leave Kochi by 9 am if you land early
  • Lunch stop around Adimali
  • Arrive and check in by 3 or 4 pm
  • Short walk near your stay before dark

Day 2: Eravikulam, tea estates and the tea museum

Start early. Eravikulam National Park, about 15 km from town, protects rolling grassland below Anamudi, the highest peak in South India. Visitors ride a forest department bus from the entry point up to the walking area, and the Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat, is often seen close to the road. The park usually closes for part of the year around the calving season, so check the current dates before you plan around it.

After Eravikulam, take a guided walk through a tea estate. Many hotels can arrange one with a local guide who explains plucking and pruning. In the afternoon, the Tata Tea Museum in Nallathanni shows how green leaf becomes the tea in your cup. Opening hours change, so ask your driver or hotel the day before.

Keep the evening free. Munnar's small town has a busy market, but most couples prefer a quiet dinner and an early night before the next morning.

Day 3: Top Station or the lakes, then down

For your last morning, pick one of two routes. Top Station, about 32 km away on the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border, is known for views across the Western Ghats when the valley is clear. Mist often fills it by late morning, so leave early. The other route takes in Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point and Kundala Lake, with optional boating at each.

Both routes are on the same road, so with an early start some couples manage a quick version of both. Leave Munnar by early afternoon to reach Kochi before evening, or continue to Thekkady if you have more days.

Where should couples stay in Munnar?

Location matters more than star rating here. Hotels in town are convenient for food and shopping but can be noisy. Resorts along the Chithirapuram, Pallivasal and Anachal roads have better views and more quiet, at the cost of a 20 to 40 minute drive to the main sights (approximate). For a short trip, a stay within half an hour of town keeps the days easy.

Ask for a room with a valley-facing balcony and confirm whether the hotel has heating or extra blankets in December and January, when nights get cold.

What should you book before you go?

  • Eravikulam entry, if online booking is running for your dates
  • A tea estate walk through your hotel
  • Your car and driver for all three days
  • Any room decoration or dinner set-up you want

Pack a warm layer, comfortable walking shoes and a light rain jacket in any month. Mornings are cool even when afternoons are warm.

How can you change this plan?

Couples who dislike long drives can stay the whole time near one area and add a spa afternoon. Those who want more walking can swap the lakes for a guided trek on a tea estate trail. In the monsoon, from about June to September, keep the plan loose, as rain can close trails and slow roads.

A note on pace: on day two, most couples are back at the hotel by four or five in the afternoon. That is deliberate. Hill light turns golden in the last hour before sunset, and a walk along the estate road near your stay often gives better photographs than another viewpoint.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 3 day Munnar itinerary for couples?

Drive up from Kochi on day one and rest. On day two, visit Eravikulam early, then a tea estate walk and the tea museum. On day three, go to Top Station or the lakes in the morning and drive back by afternoon. Keep at least one evening completely free.

How far is Munnar from Kochi airport?

Roughly 110 km by road, which usually takes four to five hours with a couple of stops (approximate). The last two hours are hill road with many bends. Leaving by mid-morning lets you reach Munnar before dark, which is easier and safer on the final stretch.

Is Eravikulam National Park open all year?

No. The park usually closes for part of the year around the Nilgiri tahr calving season, often in early spring. Exact dates change, so check the Kerala Forest Department or ask us before you travel. Outside the closure, go early, as queues for the park bus build up quickly.

Can we do Top Station and Eravikulam on the same day?

It is possible but tiring, as they lie in different directions from town and both are best in the morning. On a three-day trip, it is easier to visit Eravikulam on day two and Top Station on day three, before you drive back down to Kochi.

Which month is best for a short Munnar trip?

September to March usually gives the clearest views and pleasant days, with cold nights in December and January. The monsoon months are greener and quieter but views can disappear in mist. April and May are warmer and busier with school holidays, so book hotels and cars early.
